    Meet Francoise Duffy Ikebana Artist • Teacher • Scientist

    Francoise holds a PhD in Biophysics and has dedicated her life to exploring theconnections between science, beauty, and human expression. Born in France andeducated in both Europe and the United States, she was a professor at the University ofMontreal and later at Harvard Medical School, where she taught psychiatricpharmacology and was Director of the Laboratory of Neuro-Psychobiology. Her love for Ikebana is deeply connected to her passion for music, especially opera andthe human voice - natural expression of emotion and harmony. With a background inscience, psychology, and the arts, Francoise finds in Ikebana the same balance,elegance, and quiet beauty she has studied and written about throughout her life.She has published scientific works and articles on various subjects and continues toexplore form and perception through her writing. She is also passionate aboutphotography, which deepens her attention to light, framing, and natural detail—a visualsensitivity that echoes in her floral compositions.Francoise teaches with care and clarity, guiding students to explore line, color, andspace as a way to express themselves and connect to the world around them."Ikebana is not about arranging flowers.     Bia Ades is an Ikebana teacher dedicated to the Hijiri Ikenobo school of Japanese floral art. Her work reflects a deep appreciation for beauty, balance, and self-expression, qualities she brings gracefully into every arrangement. She currently serves as Treasurer of Sakura Virtual Ikebana, a global community that fosters connection and creativity through the practice of Ikebana. With a background in interior design, Bia has spent years cultivating an intuitive sense of harmony, proportion, and spatial elegance. Her professional path also includes experience in furniture manufacturing and ceramics, enriching her understanding of form, texture, and craftsmanship—skills that naturally translate into her floral work. Born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, Bia has lived in Europe and now resides in the United States. This multicultural journey informs her distinctive approach to Ikebana. In addition to Ikebana, Bia has a lifelong interest in bonsai and in all aspects of Japanese culture, which continues to inspire and inform her creative path. Passionate about sharing the essence of Ikebana, Bia teaches and creates with the philosophy that floral art is not only an aesthetic practice, but also a path to reflection, connection, and inner peace.
